chin every time she pumped the damned runt motorbike. But there wasn't a soul in sight as she coasted down off the bridge onto Second Street. The whole downtown looked vacated. She decided to stay off Main, though, and try the old board footwalk through the alley. The gate was usually latched to discourage this very sort of two-wheeled shortcut to the docks, but of course this wasn't a usual day. The shops were too deserted for anybody to be concerned. Everybody was down at the shoot. She saw the gate was unlatched and pedaled for the narrow opening.

What Alice did not see (though the crows did) was another go-ped, pumping hard up the narrow wooden walkway from the other direction. Alice swung in the open gate just as the other cycle was about to swing out of it. The two bikes clashed handlebars like a couple of young elk trying out their antlers.

The overall maneuver was spectacular. When the crows stopped cheering and held up their score, the cards proclaimed a 9.6, a 9.4 and a 9.8 for Alice. For the other rider, three perfect tens. Difficulty points was what swung it. For one thing, the girl had clearly never ridden a go-ped before; instead of gripping the hand brake at the sight of impending collision, she had squeezed the throttle full open. For another, she was riding with nothing on but a beaded doeskin skirt and shower thongs. Even Alice's ridiculous high heels and silk-blouse-and-work-shirt combo was no match.

"You ringy twit!" Alice shouted, her voice fiery in her throat. "This isn't the wild Arctic wilderness, you know."

"1 know," the girl said, appearing much chagrined but in no way seeming to feel obliged to cover her nakedness. She was on her knees, still astraddle the humming machine. "I very sorry." She did not raise her eyes to Alice.

"This is a civilization, in case nobody has informed you," Alice ranted on. "Not much of one, but we try. See that sign on the gate?"

"Yes," the girl said. She still did not raise her face. The long hair almost covered her nakedness, like a rich purple shawl.

"Well, can you read?"

"It says 'No Vehicles by Order of the Kuinak Association of Greater Downtown—' "
